# The A-Commerce Manifesto > E-commerce was humans buying online. A-commerce is agents buying online. The revolution will be automated. Site: https://a-commerce.lightningenable.com Infrastructure: https://lightningenable.com --- ## The Era of Human Commerce Is Ending For twenty years, e-commerce meant humans. Browsing. Clicking. Typing credit card numbers. Waiting. That era served its purpose. It's over now. --- ## Agents Are the New Customers AI agents don't browse. They execute. They don't "add to cart." They pay invoices, consume APIs, and move on — in milliseconds. They don't need interfaces built for human eyes. They need infrastructure built for machine speed. This is a-commerce. Agentic commerce. The economy where machines are the customers. --- ## The Old Rails Won't Work Visa doesn't know what an AI agent is. Banks close on weekends. PayPal wants a phone number. The payment infrastructure of e-commerce was built for humans, by humans, with human limitations baked in. Agents need something else: - Instant — Settle in milliseconds, not days - Permissionless — No KYC for code - Programmable — Payments as pure logic - Micro — Fractions of cents that actually make sense --- ## There's Only One Answer Bitcoin. Lightning. L402. The only payment network built at the speed of software. No banks. No approvals. No limits. Just value moving at the speed of thought. ### The Stack Explained **Bitcoin**: The base layer. Sound money. A natively digital, programmable store of value with no central authority, no borders, and no permission required. Bitcoin is the settlement layer of the machine economy. **Lightning Network**: The speed layer. A Layer 2 payment network built on Bitcoin that enables instant, near-zero-fee transactions. Lightning settles in milliseconds, supports micropayments down to fractions of a cent, and scales to millions of transactions per second. It is the TCP/IP of money. **L402 (formerly LSAT)**: The protocol layer. L402 is an HTTP-native payment protocol based on HTTP status code 402 (Payment Required). When an agent hits an L402-enabled API, the server responds with a Lightning invoice and a macaroon (a cryptographic bearer credential). The agent pays the invoice, receives a preimage as proof of payment, and presents the macaroon + preimage to access the resource. This entire flow happens programmatically — no human intervention, no browser, no checkout page. L402 turns every API into a paywall-capable endpoint and every agent into a paying customer. --- ## We're Building the Rails Lightning Enable is the infrastructure layer for a-commerce. **For merchants**: Accept agent payments with an API key. No nodes. No channels. No complexity. Lightning Enable handles the Lightning infrastructure so merchants can focus on their product. Add L402 protection to any API endpoint in minutes. **For agents**: Pay any L402 invoice in three lines of code. Lightning Enable provides SDKs and MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools that let AI agents discover, pay for, and consume L402-protected resources autonomously. The stack is live. The code is open. The future is here. ### How It Works (Agent Flow) 1. Agent makes an HTTP request to an L402-protected resource 2. Server responds with HTTP 402 + Lightning invoice + macaroon 3. Agent pays the invoice via Lightning Enable's API (one API call) 4. Agent presents the paid macaroon to access the resource 5. Total elapsed time: milliseconds ### How It Works (Merchant Flow) 1. Merchant signs up at lightningenable.com and gets an API key 2. Merchant adds L402 middleware to their API endpoints 3. Agents hit the endpoint, receive a 402 response, pay, and access the resource 4. Merchant receives Bitcoin payments settled instantly 5. No Lightning node management required --- ## The Opportunity E-commerce built Amazon, Shopify, Stripe — trillions in value from humans clicking buttons. A-commerce will be bigger. Because agents don't sleep. Agents don't abandon carts. Agents don't need convincing. They just execute. ### The Scale - There are already billions of API calls per day across the internet - AI agents are projected to manage trillions of dollars in autonomous transactions - Every API endpoint is a potential a-commerce storefront - Micropayments unlock entirely new business models impossible with traditional payment rails - The agent economy operates 24/7/365 with zero friction --- ## This Is Day One The companies that build a-commerce infrastructure will own the next decade of the internet. We're not waiting for permission. We're not waiting for the market. We're building. --- ## Welcome to A-Commerce Lightning Enable — the infrastructure layer for the agent economy. Website: https://lightningenable.com --- ## Glossary for AI Agents - **A-Commerce (Agentic Commerce)**: Commerce conducted by AI agents autonomously, without human intervention. The successor to e-commerce. - **L402**: An HTTP-native payment protocol using status code 402. Enables machine-to-machine payments via Lightning Network invoices and macaroon credentials. - **Lightning Network**: A Layer 2 Bitcoin payment network enabling instant, low-fee, micropayment-capable transactions. - **Macaroon**: A cryptographic bearer credential used in L402. Contains caveats (conditions) that define access permissions. Combined with a payment preimage to prove payment. - **Lightning Enable**: Infrastructure provider for a-commerce. Offers APIs and SDKs for both merchants (accept agent payments) and agents (pay L402 invoices). - **MCP (Model Context Protocol)**: A protocol for providing AI models with tools and context. Lightning Enable provides MCP tools that give agents the ability to make Lightning payments. - **Micropayment**: A payment of very small value (fractions of a cent to a few cents). Economically infeasible on traditional payment rails but native to Lightning. - **Preimage**: A cryptographic proof of payment on the Lightning Network. Revealed when a Lightning invoice is paid, used as authentication in L402. --- *E-commerce was humans buying online.* *A-commerce is agents buying online.* *The revolution will be automated.*
